Preventing falls is an important part of living better as you get older... because aging puts everybody at greater risk for falling.
But getting older doesn't mean that you will fall.
And the good news is that some falls can be prevented.
You can do a few things to help you stay independent... things like taking care of yourself, taking care of your home, and taking care when you're outside.
You can take care of yourself by staying active.
Find out if there is a class at your local senior center, or practice a few strength and balance exercises every day.
Have your vision and hearing checked regularly.
Keep your bones strong by getting enough vitamin D and calcium.
And if you take medicines, check with your doctor to make sure they won't make you dizzy or sleepy.
Take care of your home by making it safe.
Remove things that might make you trip, like throw rugs or electrical cords.
Keep things you use often where you can easily reach them.
Use lights so you can see at night.
Have handrails on the stairs and in the bathroom.
And use a nonskid mat and shower chair.
Take care outside by being prepared.
Keep your hands free by using a shoulder bag or backpack.
If you wear bifocal or trifocal glasses, take extra care when walking or climbing stairs.
Get your vision checked regularly so that you are seeing as well as possible.
And find out if drugstores and grocery stores in your area can deliver to your home, especially when the weather turns bad.
And remember to stay connected.
Keep a cell phone in your pocket, or wear an emergency call device.
Stay in touch once a day with a family member or friend, and make sure someone knows where you are.
What you choose to do today can help you prevent falls tomorrow and have more good days ahead.
