Cancer: Life After Treatment

Cancer: Life After Treatment (00:02:13)
Video Transcript

[Marilyn] "When my cancer treatment ended, my friends threw a party for me.

Part of me felt like celebrating ... and part of me didn't.

It's hard to explain that to friends."

"I know it's time for me to get back to my old life, but I don't feel ready.

And I'm a different person now."

"There's plenty I won't miss about treatment ... especially feeling sick.

But the thing about treatment is ... I had a routine ...

people around me ... a goal to focus on.

But now ... well ... I feel a little lost."

"People say 'You beat this ... you did it.' But I don't always feel like I won ... I feel more vulnerable sometimes ...

wondering if the cancer will come back."

"And my body ... it's been through so much."

"Sometimes I just lose it over little things ...

and I wonder, 'Why is this all hitting me now?' I should be happy that I'm alive."

[Host] Reaching the end of your cancer treatment can be a time of joy.

It's a milestone that some people celebrate with family and friends.

But even after finishing treatment, you'll probably need time to adjust to all the changes.

Try to be patient with yourself ... and remember ...

there are going to be ups and downs. Give yourself time to adjust.

[Marilyn] "Some of the changes in my life have been good.

I don't expect everything to be perfect ...

but I do try to live each day with purpose ... stay active ...

connect with friends ... find activities I enjoy ... just try to be grateful."

"And I take time to myself when I need to."

"I've also learned to be honest with myself ...

and my friends ... about how I'm doing.

To admit that it's still hard. To do what's right for me.

I feel like I'm stronger from this ... and I'm going to be okay."
