The Cardiovascular Medicine Exercise Physiology Internship offers a 16-week long internship program geared towards Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science and Kinesiology students seeking a clinical experience in cardiac rehabilitation and stress testing. The program’s weekly time commitment is 40 hours per week. Hours of operation are 8am-5pm, with evening hours one day per month.
Our goal is to provide the student with the opportunity to work within many programs Cardiovascular Medicine offers along with observation of programs and procedures offered at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. Students will receive additional education on topics pertaining to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certification exam. The following are included in the internship program:
Mentorship Program
Students choose a mentor to guide them through their internship. This person will provide one-on-one education as well as career guidance.
Stress Testing
Studies performed include: Stress Echocardiogram, Regular GXT treadmill testing, and cardiopulmonary studies. Students will learn to obtain preliminary medical histories, appropriately prepare patient for stress testing and conduct each style of test from beginning to end.
Phase II Cardiac Rehab
Students will familiarize with aspects of patient entry and completion of the rehab program. Students will become proficient in obtaining vitals, prescribing exercise, providing patient education and modifying patient risk factors.
Fitness Center (Phase III)
The fitness center is designed as a drop in gym for our members. Students will be responsible for continued patient education, personal assistance with exercise and instruction, and group exercise leadership.
Metabolic Syndrome Program (Met Fit)
The student will learn more about factors involving Metabolic Syndrome and be responsible for exercise leadership in this program. Students will assist with fitness testing and evaluation at various stages of the program.
Cardiovascular Center (CVC)
A weekly rotation to the CVC will provide students with the opportunity to observe:
- Nuclear Medicine
- Cardiac Catheterization lab
- Electrophysiology lab
- Cardiology Grand Rounds
- Stat Echocardiograms and ECGs
- Cardiopulmonary testing in heart failure patients
- Ongoing research studies
- Pediatric Cardiology
Mock Interview
At the mid-way point of the internship students are given a mock interview to prepare them for upcoming job interviews. These interviews are performed by the exercise physiology staff in a group setting. Feedback from the interview will be given to the student to help improve interview skills.
Case Study Presentation
Students are assigned a current cardiac rehab patient. Students will then present the patient’s history and develop an exercise prescription as well as discuss a plan for education based on the patient’s learning needs and interests.
Internship presentation
As a capstone project for the internship, the student will deliver a 20-30 minute presentation to the exercise physiology staff. Topics are to be relevant to cardiology and/or exercise science and must be approved by the internship coordinators.
Nutrition and Stress Management Programs
Students will have the opportunity to observe these additional services provided by Cardiovascular Medicine.
